Pitch Wars #BoostMyBio

Some of you may have read my bio post earlier this year, but here is more about me and my writing!

First of all, I am a wife and mommy. At the time this post goes live, I will be in the hospital having kiddo #3. And yes, I am enough of a Harry Potter geek that, of the window given me by the doctors, I chose July 31st, Harry Potter's birthday, to have my daughter. (Honestly, it is maybe the only reason I'm okay with being basically forced into a c-section). And for those of you trying to do the math, the timing works out that I was newly pregnant for the entirety of NaNoWriMo and still managed to bang out 50,000 words (though you can read my post on how I kind of cheated here).

My day job is a high school band director. My maternity leave means that I will miss a big chunk of the marching band season, which I'm kinda sad about, though I won't miss the 50 hour work weeks during this busy time of year. I'll be enjoying the air conditioning instead, and some quiet time with my daughter and my writing.

You can tell I'm a music teacher in my writing. I write YA contemporary, many elements inspired by my day job. Every one of my manuscripts so far has some aspect of the music world in it, even if it's just for a side character (you can read about my many WIPs here).

The manuscript I'm submitting to Pitch Wars this year is currently titled "Lift Me Up" (but I'm considering a change). This manuscript was greatly influenced by my own depression and the many accounts of teenage depression that I encountered over my years of being a teacher. I wanted to write a story that shared the reality of depression and suicide, while offering a chance at a happy ending. I wanted to write something that showed my readers that they are not alone in their journey. That there are ways to deal with what life throws at them.

"Lift Me Up" is also a romance. It's kind of a Romeo and Juliet-esque forbidden romance with some of the desperation that ended up bringing those star-crossed lovers to their demise.

Probably the most unique thing I can brag about with my manuscript is that the main character's gender is not revealed. I'm not trying to say that the character is ambiguous or gender fluid. The point is that the gender of the character doesn't matter. The character can be a boy or girl, or something in between and the story still works. Love is love, after all. I want readers to be able to read the MC in whatever way they want. A straight reader can read the MC as straight. A gay reader can read the MC as gay. But the story has nothing to do with the gender or sexuality of the character.

Well, it's getting late and I have a big day ahead of me...just a little thing like meeting my daughter. If you're intrigued by me or my manuscript, please go back to my earlier bio post for a few more interesting tidbits and feel free to browse around the rest of my site.
