Mom-ing is Hard

I'm a mom. My sons are 4 and (almost) 7 years old. They are absolutely mama's boys. They cling to me so hard. The problem is I work full time--more than 40 hours a week a lot of the time because of my band director job. I have after school rehearsals, night performances, auditions, trips. When I'm finally home, my boys want my full attention. But I'm tired!

I don't want to downplay what my husband does for our family. He works part time and then watches our youngest. Our youngest is a handful. My husband is very glad for a break when I get home. My oldest gets off the bus at the same time. The kids want mommy.

After a few minutes of doting, I take a fifteen minute break to change out of my work clothes and breathe. The rest of the night, they're mine.

Hubby and I take turns fixing dinner. A lot of the time, we eat out since we're both too tired too cook. After dinner, it's play time. That is, I play with the 4 year old while the (almost) 7 year old watches YouTube videos about Minecraft and the hubby puts his feet up and watches Netflix. I give the kids baths and get them ready for bed. We take a few minutes for family cuddle time before the kids finally fall asleep.

I talk with the hubby for a while and maybe put away laundry or something. I finally get "me" time when I should be going to sleep. Sometimes I sacrifice rest so I can write. I write best at night in bed for some reason. Maybe because it's quiet. My life is loud.

So yeah, mom-ing is hard. I would argue it's harder than dad-ing. But dad's have to kill spiders. And carry heavy boxes. And fix toilets. Mom-ing requires cuddling. And tickling. And pretending.

I guess mom-ing is worth the hard work.

  1. That is indeed hard. I'm a teacher, but it leaves me time enough to write, be a dad and even procrastinate, so I cannot really complain...

    1. Sometimes I write on my lunch break, but as a music teacher there's always noise...always! I can usually scrape out enough concentration at work for tweeting or blogging, but the silence of night is where I write best. I have stayed up way too late many nights in order to write a little more.
